EGMONT COUNTY COUNCIL

MODEL BY-LAWS SUPPORTED. ENGINEERING WORK LAST MONTH. The Egmont County Council yesterday decided to support the adoption of a model set of by-laws by all Taranaki County Councils. Mr. J. Connett, president of the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association, wrote submitting reasons why the model bylaws should be adopted. It was very desirable that the’counties of Taranaki should be unanimous, he said. . Their by-laws, the chairman (Cr. W. C. Green) stated, were as up-to-date as most but should, have been revised years ago. For example, it was an offence to go through a township or across an intersection at more than 12 miles per hour. v Then there was the license fee for hawkers. As the by-laws stood it would cost a hawker about £lOO to . go round the mountain. Naturally no magistrate would enforce the payment of that fee. It appeared that various members of the association had now changed their minds, although the by-laws had been under discussion for two years. He recommended all the Taranaki courities to come in. Not a great deal more expense would be involved than had already been met. It was decided to give Mr. Connett’s letter support.
