TARANAKI BAND CONTEST

ARRANGEMENTS AT ELTHAM. CONDUCTOR’S MEDAL OFFERED. Arrangements for the Taranaki band contest at Eitham next year were made at a public meeting at Eitham. Mr. G. W. Peebles presided.. Eitham was a most suitable location for the contest, Mr. Peebles said, and when held there before it had been a great success. He believed the forthcoming contest would be equally successful. He hoped the Hawera band would be persuaded to alter its decision not to take part in the B grade competition. Mr. J. D. McKay said the people of Eitham'were favourably disposed towards the bands and their support would be forthcoming for the contest. He praised the good work of Mr. Peebles as secretary of the previous contest and proposed that he be the secretary on this occasion. Mr. Peebles did not think he could devote the necessary time to the work but he offered to act in conjunction with another in the capacity. A contest committee was set up consisting of Messrs. J. D. McKay (chair.man)‘, A. W. Packard, T. E. Trask, A. Q. Whiting, I. J. Bridger, G. Morton, E. Crabtree, H. Andrews (union delegate), C. Carncross, A. O. Casey, W. J. 'Tristram and G. W. Peebles. Mr. Andrews stated it had been decided by the Taranaki Bands Union not to give cash prizes this year but any profits would be used toward helping to pay the expenses of the competing bands, No outside players would be allowed to play for any band. . As the competition was tor the shields only, Mr. McKay said, he would donate a gold medal to the conductor winning the highest musical points in the quickstep and selection in the B grade. He would endeavour to obtain a similar medal for the' winning conductor in the C Grade. . It was decided to apply for the use of Taumata Park for March 23 and to endeavour to obtain a reduction of the rental fee. It w as decided to write to the Defence Department asking for the appointment of a military judge. The question of broadcasting the evening programme was discussed and it was resolved to make representations to the broadcasting board. Mr. Peebles said the Athletic Club was. in negotiation with the Power Board for the permanent installation of electric light around the track and it was suggested that if the contest committee would assist with a donation it would be necessary only to carry an extension to the centre' of the field. The committee s lighting costs would be thus lessened.
