DEATH OF MRS. MARY SKELTON. NIECE OF CHIEF TI TAKO. At the age of 83 years the death occurred at New. Plymouth yesterday of Mrs. Mary Skelton. She had been living with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. T. Hawkings, at Smart-Road. ■ A daughter of Captain Cook, one of New Plymouth’s early pioneers, Mrs. Skelton was on her mother’s side a highranking chieftainess in the Atiawa tribe. Her uncle was Wi Tako, a well-known Atiawa chief in the Taranaki and Wellington provinces. For his loyal services to the Crown during the Te Rauparaha troubles of the ’forties Wi Tako was given a Government grant of 500 acres on Smart Road, New Plymouth. It was upon part of this property that Mrs. Skelton died. She was bom at Hua, on the site of Mr. Sampson’s homestead, between the Waiwakaiho golf links and Bell Block, and was adopted by Wi Tako. She married Mr. George Augustus Skelton, who came to New Zealand with the Royal Engineers. Mrs. Skelton is survived by four sons and a daughter.
