SERVICE INAUGURATED
STRATFORD TO MAIN TRUNK THE FIRST GOODS TRAINS RUN. HEAVY FREIGHT TO TARANAKI. The train inaugurating the through goods service from Taranaki to the Main Trunk left the Stratford station at 5.20 a.m. yesterday. Though the train was composed entirely of goods trucks it marked an important occasion. It represented the opening of a service which has long been awaited. The service should be instrumental in increasing trade between Taranaki and Auckland and intermediate districts. The afternoon train from Taumarunui reached Stratford at 2.52 and its freight was indicative of the need for such a means of transport in the . districts through which the line passes. Nineteen trucks, many of coal and several double-deckers full of sheep, made up the train, the freight of which weighed 230 tons. , As yet passenger traffic is not catered for, though there was one man who alighted from the guard’s van at Stratford.
