DEATH OF OLD RESIDENT

MRS. S. KNUCKEY, TIKORANGI.’ Mrs. Ellen Knuckey, a member of one of the first ’ Taranaki families, died at Tikorangi yesterday, aged 82 years. Mrs. Knuckey was the wife of the late Mr. Samuel Knuckey, who predeceased her a few years ago. Both Mr. and Mrs. Knuckey were born at New Plymouth and were well-known pioneers. Mrs. Knuckey was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cock. Her father arrived at New Plymouth Uy the Regina in 18-11, while her mother, who was Miss Ellen Julian before her marriage, arrived by the Blenheim in November, 1842. Mrs. Knuckey was born at New Plymouth, at the old Mt. Eliot pilot , station. She married Mr. Sam Knuckey, whose parents, Nicholas and Zenobia Knuckey, arrived by the Essex in January, 1843. Mr. Sam Knuckey played his part in the later Maori War period from 1883. He was a member of the No. 2 (Bushranging) Company, and at the cessation of hostilities was granted land at Tikorangi. There he farmed for the greater part of his life and, with liis brother-in-law, Mr. John Foreman, became one of the district’s leading farmers. He was a large shareholder of Native lands in the Waihi Block, and retired from. farming some years ago.

Mrs. Knuckey had been in bad health, for some time. Mr. R. Cock (New Plymouth) is her only surviving brothdr, while her sisters are Mrs. W. J. Foreman (New Plymouth,) Mrs. Creagmile (Auckland), and Mrs. R. J. Collins, wife of the late Comptroller-General, Colonel Collins (Wellington). Of fourteen children the following are still living: William (Waitara), Lewis (Waltara), Richard (Eltham), Mrs. C. Jury (New Plymouth), Mrs. G. Foreman (Tikorangi), Mrs. C. Sarten (Tikorangi), Mrs. F. Sarten (Tikorangi), Mrs. A. Jupp (Tikorangi) and Mrs. S. George (Waitara).
