JUDGING OF CALVES
SOUTH TARANAKI AWARDS.
PIHAMA ENTRIES A RECORD.
The judging of calves in the South Taranaki Boys’ and Girls’ Club competitions was continued yesterday, when Manaia, Otakeho, Oeo and Pihama schools were visited. The judges were Messrs. A. T. Wills (condition), D. P. Malone (dairy type) and' R. Syme (chart).
, At Manaia the judges were entertained at morning tea by the teachers and at Otakeho they were the guests of Mr. and Mrs.- A. S. Burns at lunch. Mr. and Mrs. J. Jolley provided afternoon tea at Pihama.
The chairman of the Otakeho school committee, Mr. S. H. le Fleming, congratulated the children on their good entry of calves after being absent from the competitions last year. He thanked the judges for their- keen interest in the edmpetitons. Mr. H. A. Nicholls announced that he would donate a cup for competition in the Otakeho group for. the best dairy type Jersey calf. There were very good entries at Pihama, the number of calves exhibited Constituting a record. The awards were:— I

Friesian yearling: Pat Butler 1. INSTRUIviENTAL RECITAL. MISS FAIRHALL AND MR. GEORGE A charming recital was given by the pupils of Miss Kathleen Fairhall and Mr.' Rupert George' assisted by Messrs. A. E. Morris and H. W. Lester. Though the lengthy programme was very large-' ly of instrumental items it held the attention of a fair attendance. Miss Fairhall (piano) and Mr. George (violin) assisted by Mr. Lester (cello) played two polished trios, one at each end of the programme. Miss Fairhall and Mr. George played one of Franck’s sonatas and Mr. George played a solo, i Mr. Moris sang twice. His first was the Drinking Song . from “Cavalleria .Rusticana” and the second, which was perhaps the better, “Where Corals Lie”. (Elgar). ' The pupils . were heard in a varied selection of instrumental, numbers. The Fox trio and some of the; tiny players attracted most attention. One litle girl, Hilda Meharry, impressed with ’ her fingering. Little Noreen Goodyer was another diminutive player of promise. . Piano, sblos were played by the following: David Watts, “A . (Carroll); Noreen Goodyer, “Sheltering in. the Wood,” and “Raindrops”/ (Carroll); Miss Ivy Crosbie, “Scherzo” (Schubert); Miss Hazel Yorke “Spring\ Song’’ . (Grieg;; Miss Joan Nelson, “Columbine” (Frank Bridge)'; Miss. Marjorie Homer, “Intermezzo” ■ (Brahms) and “The Snowdrop” (York Bowen); Miss G. • Hall, “No 4 Kreisleriana” '(Schumann) and Prelude I in. E. Minor (Mendelssohn). . | ’Violin solos were contributed by the
following; Miss Betty Pinson, “Serenata” (Tosselli); Master Alan Horner, “Loure” (Bach);' Master Cyril Betts, “Serenade” (Schubert). Margaret Fox played “Lamentation, Consolation, Menuetto, March” (Kreuz) on the viola. A well played number was an instrumental trio “Gems from the Masters,” by Louis (violin), Margaret (viola) and Olga Fox (‘cello). Duets on the programme were: Piano, “Waltz and March” (Carroll), Noreen Goodyer and Glyn Thomas; ‘ Rondo (Gurlitt), Misses Ola McAnerin (first) and Marjorie Horner . (second;, and “Valse” (Arensky), Misses G. Hall (first) and A. Betts (second). ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. G. H. Perry and Co., advertises particulars of a sale by auction at the firms rooms, High Street, Hawera, to-day at 1.15 p.m. The firm also announces a sale on Saturday on behalf of a.leading raranaki retail house of a consignment of clotliing and general drapery lines. Smith and Trim Ltd., Hawera, advertises particulars of mart sales for tojay, in Nolan’s Buildings at 11 a.m., of oungas, battens and fruit, and at 1.30 0.m., of wireless set, dairy rubber goods, small vice, furniture in 1 variety, and a small quantity of fancy goods.
