NO RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS
SELECTION COMMITTEE DECIDES. THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. For the first time New Zealand will be without, Rhodes scholars this year. The selection committee met at Government House to-day. After five candidates had appeared before it and after protracted deliberations upon their merits it was resolved to make no award.
It is understood the meeting was the longest selection committee meeting ever held. Victoria University College did not nominate any candidates, and Otago University made only one nomination, but Auckland and Canterbury Colleges both submitted two students.
Those present at the meeting, at which Lord Bledisloe presided, were the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers), Professor J. Macmillan Brown (chancellor of the University of New Zealand), Professor H. W. Segar (chairman of the academic board), Sir Andrew Russell, Professor P. W. Robertson and Mr. C. M. Gilray, the last two being former Rhodes Scholars.
