Following the unsuccessful prosecution of the Melbourne Truth' publisher, the Attorney-General (Mr. J- G. Latham) announced that the Governpienx would introduce an amendment to the Crimes Act, which would prevent a defendant who was the publisher of a newspaper pleading when charged with certain offepces that he was ignorant of what had been published in his paper. The publisher mentioned, William Arthur Payne, was charged in the Civil Court, under the Commonwealth Crimes Act, with having incited members of the crews of the warships Australia, Canbera, Albatross, Tattoo and other ships to mutiny. Defendant pleaded not guilty. He said he did not write the article and had not known of its publication. He was acquitted by the jury and discharged. This was the first trial of its kind in Australia.
