AMATEUR ATHLETICS
WEEKLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. GOOD SPORT AT NEW PLYMOUTH. The increased interest that is being taken in amateur athletics was very evident last night, when at the New Plymouth club’s weekly meeting on the sportsground last evening there was an encouraging improvement, not only in the fields for all events but also in the attendance of the general public. The sport throughout was excellent and all the finishes Were close. S. A. Black turned out in the first heat of the 220 yards event and without extending himself ran into third place, but he did not contest the final.
Following are the results: Junior 220 yards: J. Outted (set) l',.T. H. Rawson (10yds) 2. Time, 25 4-ss. Half-mile cycle: C. Hawkins (40yds) 1, C. B. Olliver (55yds) 2, N. C. Batten (25: yds) 3. Time, Im 8 2-SS. A great finish, inches separating the placed men. 220 yards senior: First heat: R. Boucher. (26yds) 1, . G._ Taylor (28yds) 2, S.. A.; Black (syds) 3. Time, 21 4-ss. Second heat: H. L. Thomson (15yds) 1, H. S. Kingston (24yds) 2, E. Jackson (26yds) 3. Time, 235. Final: H. L. Thomson 1, R. Boucher 2, G. Taylor 3. Time, 22 l-ss. Thomson, who is a much improved runner this. season, displayed .fine judgment and won comfortably at the finish. Ladies’ 100 yards: Miss B. Bigwood (10 yds) 1, Miss B. Stevens (syds) 2, Miss M. Reilly (12yds) 3. Time, 12s. , Throwing the javelin: H. Hogg (50ft) 190 ft lOiri 1, N. J. Webster (43ft) 172 ft 9in 2, J. Insull (50ft) 166 ft 4in 3. One mile cycle: C. Hawkins (90yds) 1, N. C. Batten (45yds) 2, C. B. Olliver (100 yds) 3. Time, 2m 26 3-ss. Hawkins took command with half a lap to go and just staved off a determined challenge from Batten to win narrowly. Half mile: W. Wilson (50yds) 1, O. Evans (85yds) 2,. F. M. White. (125yds) 3. Time, 2m 3 2-ss. The limit man, White, had a commanding lead commencing the last lap, where Wilson, a High School boy, was last, but he then spurted into second place and set off after the leader,taking his measure at the straight entrance and going on to win by about eight yards from Evans, who finished well and just beat White on the tape. Running broad jump: J. Insull (3ft) 21 ft' 9Jin 1, H. Hogg (3ft 6in) ,21ft 4Jin 2, R. Boucher (3ft 6in) 20ft Ulin 3.
