MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. REPORTS FOR PERIOD RECEIVED. " The monthly meeting of the Waitara Borough Council was held last night. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. J. Hine) and Councillors H. Spurdie, W. B. Glasgow, W. J. Reeves, T. Wilson, H. Wakely, and E. A. George. The borough solicitor’s opinion on the question of hawkers operating in the town was considered and it was decided to seek information upon the position from the Wellington and. Wanganui City Councils. Requests from residents of Domett Street for the formation of a footpath were referred to the works committee. The report of Mr. C. F. Dowsett on the condition of the main road from and including the town bridge to the county boundary, which recommended banking in various places, spraying with hot bitumen and attention to the surface and cambering of the bridge footpaths, was referred to the works committee. The council decided to adhere to the imposition of a 10 per cent, penalty on rates if not paid by a-certain date. . The electrical engineer, Mr. G. O. Smith, reported that the supply was maintained continuously and the pressure well maintained, the number of units registered being 32,693 in September and 33,280 in October, compared with 32,150 and 31,010 for the respective periods last year. Eight street lamps were renewed, three• new installations connected, two reconnected, one totally rewired, one water-heater and six heating points installed. Ono complete installation with cooker and water-heater, one residential and two shop installations were ready for connection. The electric light committee reported fines on the two minor charges in connection with recent thefts of current were paid to the council. An application was received from a retailer asking, for a quotation for ornamental street lighting and requesting that the engineer should canvass the retailers to ascertain what support would be forthcoming. The tee was not agreeable to this and. before giving a quotation required the retailers to submit details of the scheme they proposed. The committee recommended that no further reduction could be made, in the charge for installation to the Soldiers and Civilians’ Club. The engineer made a concession when costing the work with the object of assisting the club. Repairs to the showroom verandah and broken window panes were referred to the committee. The borough overseer, Mr. L. T. Kendrick, reported that three water mains were repaired and one service laid. An inspection of storage of benzine backyards was made and revealed that sanitary conditions in one of the business premises were disgraceful but the owner had neglected to follow out the overseer’s requests for a period of two years. Licenses were issued for the manufacture and sale of food.. One building permit was issued and six driving licenses were taken out.

The condition of the premises mentioned was considered and it was decided to give the owner concerned a week in which to follow out the overseer’s requirements before making a prosecution. The borough foreman, Mr. W. Trim, reported the grading of Mouatt Street, repairing of. Grey Street footpaths, formation of Domett Street path and attention to a drain in Cracroft Street. Streets were clear of wandering stock the ranger, Mr. O. Jury, reported. People were complaining of long grass which they bad to wade through before reaching the metal road or a footpath. Several owners of stock were asked not to allow them to loiter as footpaths and hedges had been damaged and gardens trampled upon. After a long discussion the council decided to cut down the trees to the seaward side of the cemetery. It was decided not to erect extra gates to the cemetery at the present time but the formation of a parking ground outside the gates is to be proceeded with. The council, sitting as the Domain Board, granted the application of the Waitara Cricket Club for the use of Camp Reserve on Saturdays and alternate Thursdays subject to revision by the board if necessary.
