PERSONAL AND GENERAL.

Mr. Bohniface has returned from a visit- to the Palmerston North show.

Mr. W. Platt, of the Midhirst Dairy Cota.pany, who sat for his enginedriver’s certificate at New Plymouth recently, was successful. Miss Joyce Wildon is on a holiday visit to relatives at Hawera. Miss M. Kovaleski has returned from Wellington. Mr. Baskin has returned home from a private hospital. < A party of the Midhirst ladies made the journey to the opening of the mew railway and a most enjoyable day was spent. They included Mesdames Guthrie, Shiith, G. Andersen, P. Jones, D. Clark (Stratford), Platt and A. Graham, Misses Wardell, Anderson and N. Graham. GENERAL ITEMS. The firing of a belated bonfire in Antonio Street, Stratford, drew a large crowd last night but little excitement was forthcoming. Someone gave the alarm, the fire bells pealed and the brigade arrived only to return in some 'degree disappointed that the fire was •nowhere near a house.

The statement that £5O or £6O of borough money “went up in smoke” at (the fireworks display at Stratford on (Monday night was circulated in Stratford yesterday, but it had no basis in fact as the money used to purchase fireworks was voluntarily subscribed, Chiefly by the business people.

i Discussion on pheasants at the meeting of the Stratford Acclimatisation Society last night led to the recounting of a story ’by a member. Prior to last season two sportsmen bought £1 worth of artichoke seed and gave it to a farmer to sow. The arrangement was that the farmer should have the artichokes for his pigs while the sportsmen were to have the" right to shoot on his property. Pheasants are fond of artichokes and the reciprocal idea seemed a good one. It was for the farmer. He got the artichokes but not one pheasant patronised the patch.
