49TH EGMONT SHOW TO-DAY

BREEDERS GIVE GOOD SUPPORT.

STRONG DAIRY EXHIBITION. The Egmont A. and P. Association’s 49th show opens at Hawera to-day, and should rank as one of the most successful exhibitions yet held. Good support has been given the fixture by breeders, the entries Ibeing satisfactory. The cattle section is the main feature oi the Hawera show. This year is has drawn a total entry of 364, as against 352 last' year.. The entry comprises: Friesians 27, Ayrshires 28, Jerseys 120, Shorthorns 15, dairy section 104, grades and crossbred 22, boys’ arid girls’ clubs 48. The quality is high, and two Royal Show champions are included. There are other Palmerston North prize-winners, including animals shown by Messrs. R. L. Horn (Ohau), J. G. Donald (Featherston), H. C. Sampson (Bell Block) and G. H. Bell (Oakura). The horse section is, on the whole, good. In the Clydesdale classes there are the usual strong entries from the Moore-Hunter Estate, with competition in practically every class. With 27 entries the spring carter classes are well filled. The thoroughbreds are dis-appointing-in numbers, but judging from the breeding quality should be there. There is good competition in the hack section. The light harness section is an improvement on recent exhibitions, and includes some well-known entries. As usual the pony classes are strong, with rather better outside entries.

In the sheep seation Lincolns are considerably - stronger than usual, but the Romneys are not so satisfactory. The oNorth Island natural condition championship has had its effect among the Southdowns, one class having drawn 11 entries. The Border Leicesters are fair and the fat lambs good considering the show is earlier than usual. North Island championships are being allotted to Berkshire- pigs, these classes drawing 31 entries, all from Taranaki exhibitors. Large Whites constitute a strong class, and four exhibitors have good entries of Tamworths. There are 24 entries of Large Blacks, mainly from Palmerston North, with Mr. A. N. O’Sullivan (Cardiff) representing Taranaki. Bacon and pork classes are disappointing. The home industries section is not as strong as . the remarkably good display last year. There are about 50 entries in the “all sorts of dogs” show, which is not all that might have been expected. Trade exhibits and side-shows are a feature. In fact side-show space was exhausted before all applicants could be satisfied.

Entries are not quite so good- as last year in the ring events, ihough competition ’s quite keen. An entry of 17 in the steer-riding is satisfactory. The programme for to-day is:— 9 a.m.: Exhibition of machinery, implements, motor cars, permanent stalls, vehicles, etc.; judging cattle, sheep and pigs; 9.30 a.m.: judging hacks and harness horses; 10 a.m.: judging Clydesdale horses (other than entire), brood mares, and home industries; harness ponies; 10.30 a.m.: all sorts of dogs’ show; 1 p.m.: maiden hunters’ competition, wire jumping competition, hunting eompeti-
