TRAVELLING BOOK VANS

ANGLICANS’ DISCUSSION. SUGGESTION IN CHRISTCHURCH. A report on the subject of having a travelling book van for the sale of religious books in the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch will be prepared by the standing committee during the coming year. A motion to this effect was passed by the synod last week. The Rev. A. C. T. Purchas, who moved that the matter be dealt with by a committee before synod rose this year, said that the Church had been forestalled in this venture, principally by Seventh Day Adventists. An urgent need would be met by such a van. The experience of book vans in England was described by the Rev. F. A. Tooley, who said that vans were given generally as memorials to churchiden. The profits from the sale of books generally paid expenses and salaries, and even small English villages were able to make the visit of a van a payable one. There should be no trouble in New Zealand on that score.

It was stated by other synodsmen that the Christchurch diocese had a van some 40 years ago, but that the expense nowadays might prove too great. It was suggested that a van should be hired for a time, during which the “sporting section of the young clergy could drive it during portion of their holidays,’ as an experiment. Finally, a motion referring the matter to the standing oomtnittee for a report for next synod -was tarried.
