ADVICE FOR PARENTS. ■CHILDREN WITHOUT WORK. The manual and technical supervisor reported to the Canterbury Education Board last week, in connection with juvenile unemployment, that it was his intention, subject to the board’s approval, to distribute among parents, through the primary schools, circulars urging upon the parents of those children who in the normal course of events would be leaving the sixth standard this year to start’work, the desirability of sending their children to school until such time as they are enabled to secure permanent employment. He expressed the opinion that those boys who thia year fail to secure proficiency or competency certificates should return to their primary schools or, if eligible, proceed, to a technical school in order to fulfil the requirements of this examination, especially in view of the fact that a boy without this qualification would be at a decided disadvantage in seeking employment. In the case of those boys gaining proficiency or competency certificates it was proposed to urge parents, in the Interests of their children, to take advantage ol the free post primary education which is available to pupils having either of these qualifications, and to invite those parents who desire such advice to consult head masters regarding the type of post-primary education which is most suitable for their children’s requirements. After consideration it was decided to approve the suggestions offered. Mr. S. R. Evison and the supervisor were deputed to compile a circular memorandum to parents on the subject.
