The magistrate decided to convict Francis Devanny, who with three others was charged with soliciting contributions for an allegedly illegal organisation, the Communist Party, in Australia. The charge, the reading of which occupied three hours, arose out of an appeal for funds through a Communist organ, The Workers’ Weekly. Devanny was remanded for sentence till November 30. Bail was allowed. It is the first conviction under the amended Crimes Act dealing with Communism.
