TIMBER INDUSTRY WAGES
FAILURE OF CONCILIATION.
NEITHER PARTY WILL BUDGE.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Auckland, August 10. No agreement has been reached in Conciliation Council Which yesterday discussed the employers’ application for a new award in the timber industry. In comment to-day the secretary of the Employers’ Association, Mr. Wright, who was one of the advocates,. said: “In my opinion, since the coming into force of the Arbitration Amendment .Act neither the employers nor the unions have found their feet with regard to its operation. Both sides seem to fear to make a definite offer for a settlement on a basis commensurate with the present economic position.” The workers’ -advocate, Mr. Phelan, said there was no attempt at conciliation. The employers submitted their claims and eat silent. Mr. Wright: “We made no offer outside what was contained in the claims we tabled because trie union stated definitely that they would not budge from the present award. As the workers said they could not come down the employers felt that they could not go up.”
