NEW ZEALAND HOCKEY TOUR FIRST CHECK IN THEIR CAREER. GOOD FORWARD COMBINATION. By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. Rec. 10.10 p.m. Sydney, Aug. 1. The New Zealand hockey team’s first fixture at Sydney w as a match against Metropolitan at Rushcutter’s Bay today. The game was played in beautiful weather aud ended in a draw with four goals to each team. ° The visitors’ forwards displayed brilliant combination, enabling Turbitt and Reid to score. Metropolitan took a hand and attacked, but excellent defence held them at bay until nearly half-time, when they scored twice rapidly, making the half-time score 2-all. Metropolitan forwards showed better stick work after the interval but again found the New Zealanders’ defence solid. Then both sides scored a goal, the New Zealanders’ being from a penalty. Wellbourne put his side in front with a scorching shot from the edge of the circle. Not long afterwards Hogg, for Metropolitan equalised the scores. The outstanding New Zealanders were Munro, Joblin, Turbitt and Wellbourne. The New Zealand team defeated Tenterfield on Saturday by 14 goals to one. The visitors were far too good for their opponents. Turbitt and Anthony shone throughout, the former scoring seven goals, Anthony six and Roberts one.. ° The New Zealanders were given a civic reception at night. The local Mayor, Aiderman Petherick, said it was a compliment for a team from a sister Dominion to visit Tcnterfield. The manager, Mr. Holland, replied, saying the team was receiving the utmost hospi- : tality.
