JERSEY CATTLE CLUB

STRATFORD’S ANNUAL MEETING. ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE SALES. The annual meeting of the ’ Stratford. Jersey Cattle Club was held on Saturday. 'The reView of the year’s operations in the report (previously published) showed that the club had been active during the year, had attended to many matters pertaining to the interests of breeders and had completed a difficult twelve months in a good financial position. The president (Mr. H. J. Kaye) presided over a fair attendance. The balance sheet showed a credit of £4 5s 5d on the year’s working and a balance of assets over liabilities of £l4 Is lOd.

The chairman said he regretted there’ was 'not a larger attendance. The club was not in such a sound position as it was last year. That was mainly due to the fact that no donations were solicited and only one was received. Moreover only half the members were financial, and as members’ subscriptions were subsidised by the Jersey Club the loss to the club was a double one. The smoke concert proved costly. It was becoming too popular and too expensive and it had been decided in future to admit by ticket only. Last year it had cost £l3 17s 3d and this year £l6 Bs. Qn the other hand the field day and trophies costly only £5 8s as against £ll 12s 6d last year. The chairman suggested that at the •bull sale the club offer a free invitation to the smoke concert to everyone who bought a bull. The suggestion will be considered by the committee. Officers elected were: President, Mr. H. J. Kaye; vice president,.Mr. £>. Gadsby; committee,- Messrs. C. Clemow, 0. McAloon, G. Bell, W. Johnson and D. O’Sullivan; auditor, Mr. R. V. Kay.

It was decided to hold the bull fair on October 12, the committee to have power to alter the date if necessary. The committee will be recommended to hold the heifer sale towards the end of October and to appoint •the three Stratford stock firms as joint auctioneers to canvass their own entries. CO-OPERATION AMONG CLUBS. The chairman said he had approached members of the committee of the New Plymouth club, who thought there would be no objection to Stratford’s circularising breeders in North Taranaki regarding the spring female sale. Mr. Kaye considered that if North Taranaki breeders would support the Stratford spring \sale and New Plymouth would accept' Stratford entries for the autumn aale there would be a good spring sale at Stratford and a good autumn sale at New Plymouth. “It has always been a matter of regret with me that the, Taranaki clubs have not co-operated more with sales, as it would be to their mutual advantage to do so,” he said.

The executive will enter into negotiations with other cattle clubs regarding reciprocity in entries for sales.

In accordance with notice the chairman moved that the group test be also recognised in order to qualify bulls for preference in the catalogue for forthcoming bull sales. Some breeders who did not test seemed to think that their entries would be placed at a disadvantage, said Mr. Kaye, but he thought that animals from non-tested stock would benefit at the sale through keener competition. The demand nowadays was for butterfat, and ,a farmer could not afford to milk cows without a good butterfat record. The, proposal would increase the number of testing members and would improve the quality of stock. The group test system was a fine one that encouraged testing and improvement of herd, and its price was within the reach of all. members. Messrs. H. A. Hunt and C. Clemow spoke in support of the motion, which was carried. , Taranaki clubs will be circularised regarding their attitude towards the • following remit passed at a conference at Stratford: That the Jersey Council be asked to revise the rules and standard requirements governing the 305 day test in order to put this test on a more equitable basis as compared with the 365 day test. A protest was entered against the action of the Jersey Council in deleting the subsidy on futurity stakes.

The . council will be recommended to add Messrs.. H. J. Kaye, C. Clemow, O. McAloon, 6. Gadsby and W. Johnson to the judges’ list. The following new members were elected: Messrs. J. Corlett and Corlett, Jnr. (Ratapiko), Kirton Bros. (Kohuratahi) and J. B. Crawford (Stratford). GENERAL ITEMS. . The only building 'permit issued by the Stratford Borough Council during July was one for a motor garage to cost £25. Vital statistics for the Stratford district for the past month with the figures for July, 1931, in parentheses are:— Births 18 (11), deaths 6 (8), marriages 8 («).
