LEAGUE CYCLE CLUB RACES

SPLENDID FINISHES RESULT. C. GILBERT AND GILLIES WINNERS. The cycle road series conducted fortnightly by the New Plymouth Cycle and Athletic League were continued bn •Saturday. Slight head winds and showers were experienced,' blit good times were recorded and the handicaps were, a credit to the responsible man, Air. L. E. Smith. The officials present were: Judges, Messrs. F-. E, Orbell, W., Yardley,' E. Knofflock, G. Tippins; starter and handicapper, Air. Smith; referee,Afr. G. Sole; time-keepers, Messrs. D. George and Smith; number steward, Afr. A. Gable;, committee, Air. R. Yardley. Mr. T. Robinson assisted as a turn steward. The results are:— A grade. Second of series of six races for cup and miniature presented by Afr. A. George, and a runner-up trophy given by the club. Onaero and back, 31 miles: — C. Gilbert (IJmin.), Ihr. 24min. 7sec. 1 T. Haw (IJmin.), Ihr. 24min. 7 1-5 sec. 1... 2 G. Plucke (3£min.), Ihr. 26min. 7 2-5 see 3 H. Eva (3min.)> Ihr. 25min. 37 2-5 see. 4 N. Bellringer (scratch) gained fastest time, Ihr. 23min. O' 2-ssec. . , . - Also started: C. Parker, A. Ellis, N., Bellringer ('scratch), H. Bocock and A. Mackie (Imin.), J. Wigg (2min.)> G. Puffery and H. Eva (3min.), B. Berryman (3Jmin.), L. Claffey (smin). At Waitara on the outward journey Claffey was in the lead, followed by plucke alone, then Berryman, Eva and Tuffery. The scratch men caught Mackie and Bocock soon after Waitara, and at the turn the order' was Claffey, Plucke, Tuffery, Eva, Berryman. Haw and Gilbert came along next 40sec. behind the leaders,, they having recorded fastest time at the turn, gaining seven seconds on the scratch men. The three scratch men and the two Imin. men turned in a bunch 2min. 17sec. behind Claffey. At Waitara coming back Haw, Gilbert, Claffey, Tuffery, Pluck and Eva comprised the leading bunch, , Claffey dropping back on Big Jim’s hill. The back men were then doing better, and Mackie’s laps were the fastest from Waitara home., Parker showed signs of tiring, but had the back bunch worked as Mackie did they would have gone 'close to winning, as they only finished 23sec. behind the winners. A very close finish resulted, half-wheels separating the first three riders, with Eva only half a length- further back. Tuffery. was just behind the placed riders. Twentythree seconds later the back bunch, including Parker, Bellringer, Bocock, Mackie and Ellis, arrived, and Mackie proved toe goed in the final sprint, beating the bunch by two lengths. Bellringer headed the rest to gain fastest time from Parker and Ellis. . The best times in order were: N. Bellringer, Ihr. 23min. 0 2-ssec.; O. Parker, Ihr’ 23min. Isec.; A. J. Gillies (15sec.), 30min. I4sec 1 K. Gray (30sec.), 30min. 29 2-ssec. - Doug. George (scr.), 29min. 59 4-ssec. 3 A. Reeve (scr.), 30min. 2sec. 4 George gained fastest time. Also started: N. Knight (4min.), B. Sole (Imin.), F. Toms (15sec.). Knight mistook the turn and lost his chance. The other riders bunched on the outward journey. George and Reeve worked well and eaught the others just before the turn. . These six kept together until the finish,, where Toms skidded on tho wet road and fell. Gillies finished best and won by two lengths from Gray, who beat George by a length, Reeve being three lengths The best times in order were: D. George, 29min. 59 4-ssec.; A. Reeve,. 30 min. 2sec.; J. Gillies, 30min. 14see. The series points are:—A grade: Plucke 5, Berryman 4/Gilbert and Haw 4, Tuffery 2, Mackie 1, Bellringer 1, Eva 1. .. The senior fastest time aggregate is: Mackie 2, Bellringer 2, Bocock 1, Parker 1. B grade series: George 8, Gillies 5, Gray, Martin and Reeve 3. The next races will be held on August 13, the A grade around Inglewood (27 miles) and B grade to the aerodrome and back (8 miles), starting at 2 p.m.
