FLOODS AT CHRISTCHURCH

ABNORMAL TIDES CHECK RIVERS.

WATER UP TO HOUSE VERANDAHS.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night.

Parts of New Brighton, Sumner, Mount Pleasant and Opawa were flooded this afternoon when the Avon and Heathcote Rivers, swollen by abnormally high tides and backed up by continuous easterlies, overflowed their banks and crept over the roads. The Bexley (New Brighton) district suffered most, several small holdings being completely covered with water which crept up to the verandahs of the houses but did not flow over the floors. Residents express anxiety as to the result of to-morrow morning’s high tide, and some intend to remain on watch all night to protect their properties as far as possible.
