SARAZEN WINS BRITISH TITLE

NINTH SUCCESSIVE U.S. WIN. BOBBY JONES’ RECORD BETTERED BJ Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.' London, June 10. Gene Sarazen ('U.S.A.) won the British open golf championship with a record aggregate of 283. H. MacDonald-Smith (United States) was second with.third and fourth round scores of 71 and 70, making his aggregate 287, and A. G. Havers was third with G 8 and 76 —292. _ The others include; U. Whitcombe, 73 and 7’5—294; P. Alliss, 78 and 72— 293; A. H. Padgham, 74 and 70—292; Davies, 74 and 7'5 —300; F. Robson, 78 and 71—302; Abe Mitchell, 75 and 72— 293; I. H. Cotton, 77 and 72 —303; A. Compston, 75 and 76 —300; R. A. Whitcombe, 75 and 76—297; T. D. Armour (previous holder), 74 and 83—303; A. Bradbeer, 79 and 79—299. W. Hope, with 299, led the amateurs. Sarazen’s win is the ninth successive American victory. He played 108 holes at an average of four, and he never exceeded five. He beat Bobby Jones’ record of 285. The newspapers consider that neither Bobby Jones nor Walter Hagen could have exceeded his brilliance and consistency.

He was so far ahead of the field that the news of Havers’ record round of 68 in the morning came as a pleasing incentive to further efforts, but Havers dropped irrecoverable strokes early in the afternoon, necessitating the almost impossible task of coming home in 32. igarazen, who led the field throughout, thoroughly deserved his victory. He played with the confidence of a champion. A remarkable feature was that only once in four rounds of the nearly 7000 yards course did he take a wood for a second, and he never' used No. 1 iron, the majority of his seconds being played with the No. 2 or a heavy mashie. His driving was Herculean and his putting phenomenal. Havers’ 68 was a record for the course and the best in the whole championship, but he could not stay the distance when he went out for the fourth round knowing he needed 69 to win.
