SCHOOL' COMMITTEE MEETS. The monthly meeting of the Inglewood School Committee was held on Monday evening, when Messrs, A. Grant, S. Wanklyn, R. Coutts, I, Grant, E,' Clark, H. Paterson, and S. Lovell (secretary) were present. It was reported that the school grounds, which have been waterlogged for many years, were being greatly imprpved by relief labour under fhe No. 5 scheme. Mr. McKinney reported that the ayer? age. attendance for May was 253, the roll having been greatly affected by an epidemic of mumps and a few eases of measles, besides the usual seasonal colds. The average roll for May was 286 and the present roll 284. There was no admission at the fie-, ginning of the term, due mainly to the new law affecting the age of entrance. In view of the large number of standard 6 pupils the headmaster considered it certain that when these pupils left at the end of the yeai® the school would drop in grade, entailing the loss of one of the assistants and the transfer of the head teacher, unless consolidation of some of the smaller schools was effected. The loss of capitation would also be a serious matter.

It had been suggested that an ambitious scheme should be undertaken to put the new school grounds in orfler in preparation for the school to come and thus afford useful and continuous employment for the unemployed of the district. - Several minor repairs have been effected by the Education Board's carpenter. CYCLE CLUB TRIAL RACE. On Thursday afternoon the Inglewood Qyeie Club held a very successful trial race to Waiongona and back. Ten Started and only a quarter of a mile separated the first and last at the finish, Messrs. P. Uhlenburg and P. Petersen were judges and Mr. L, Blackbourn was turn steward. The race resulted: E. Standing '(l4 min.) 1, R. Zimmerman (IJmin.) 2, Ji. Ladbrook (4min.) 3, R. Uncles (i34min.) 4. \ . N. Bellringer gained fastest time ap'd C,' Burke second fastest. Next Thurpday a race will be run round the Kai-, miro triangle. At Midhirst on Thursday the Inglewood Ramblers basketball team defeated Midhirst Pirates by 16 goals to 2, while-at Tariki Inglewood Rovers were defeated by 10 to 4. The Ramblers have played six matches apd lost one and the Rovers have played six and lost three.
