RAWHITIROA NEWS

COMPLETION OF HALL ADDITIONS. The long-planned additions to the Rawhitiroa hall have been completed, and the building is a vast improvement upon the old structure that has done duty for 20 years. Under the direction of Mr. J. H. Bleakley working bees have been busy every day for the last fortnight and the amount and quality of the work done are a credit to the overseer and his helpers. The external improvements included the demolishing of the front porch and the addition of two new dressing-rooms on the lean-to principle, with a ticket box and passageway to facilitate entry and payment. A wooden grating at the new front door effectively disposes of a long-standing nuisance—a muddy entrance, which, owing to the foundations of the hall 'being lower than the road, was formerly incurable. Inside the hall, the supper-room has been enlarged by the removal of the partition which previously divided it from the ladies’ dressing-room. The stage has been demolished, enlarging the dancing space by 250 square feet. Further facilities for serving supper have been provided, including two new folding tables and a service-door into the hall. New card tables and seats were constructed from spare building timber, and new steps and cupboards have been made for the supper-room. The additions made it necessary for new electric lighting, and this work was satisfactorily carried out by Mr. Drabble, Eltham, with the assistance of Mr. Frank Fletcher, Rawhitiroa.

Among those who voluntarily assisted in the building and the consequent clearing of the hall were Messrs. J. H. Bleakley (overseer), J. Cocker, D. May, H. J. Bleakley, L. Prankerd, F. Cave, G. V. Thame, C. Ford, F. Belcher, W. P. Jenkins, T. Coeker, E. Fletcher, E. Knuckey, L. Stretton, L. Jenkins, R. Bleakley, A. M. Wilson, A. Phillips, W. P. Bootten, T. Willy, S. Prankerd, H. Belcher, M. O’Connor, W. B. Robertson, I. Hewitt and S. Knuckey. Silver pine piles were donated by Mr. W. P. Jenkins, and Messrs. J. Gernhoefer, D. Knuckey and L. Prankerd gave free use of their lorries for transport of building materials. The first function in the enlarged hall was the fortnightly euchre and dance party on Thursday evening, and it augurs well that this function was the most successful of this season’s series. Eighteen and a half tables were occupied at the card tournament, and play was keen throughout. The ladies’ prize was won by Miss E. Laird, Mata, who gained eight points. In the men’s section Messrs. F. Cave, L. Stretton, G. Harrison, J. Paton and T. Kingham tied with seven points, and in a re-play Mr. Cave was the winner. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies of the district, following which an enjoyable dance was held. Music was provided by Mrs. Kingham, Misses E. Cocker, E. Tipler, P. O’Connor, M. Tipler, and Messrs. L. Prankerd and A. M. Wilson. Mr. Wilson was master of ceremonies.

Mr. J. Cocker, chairman of the hall committee, .announced that a meeting of settlers would be held to arrange a special function for the official opening of the hall. He said the committee hoped that with the funds already in hand a district effort would bring in sufficient money to pay off the whole cost of the additions.
