SLAPPED BY WOMAN
CURIOUS CASE IN FIJI.
DEFENDANT FINED A SHILLING.
Suva, June 1.
A somewhat amusing case came before the Police Court recently when Pundit Durga Prasad, who is known in Auckland and. Sydney, prosecuted a highly-respected Indian lady for slapping him twice on the face at a church welcome to a returned missionary. Durga refused to take the oath in the usual way, on the Bible. He also objected to take it on the Ramayan, stating that he was a Christian, but said he was willing to take the “Scotch oath.” The magistrate said as he was a Christian he must swear on the Bible, bo this he did after some delay. He said he had asked the woman’s husband why his wife wanted to give him a hiding, and the husband said it was because he had made certain allegations against her. The husband advised Durga to leave Suva as other women were also goin" to give him a hiding. fe 8 e
Durga denied saying anything about the women, and after lengthy evidence the womau was fined one shilling, without costs.
