NARROMINE AGAIN SHAKEN
GEOLOGICAL FAULTS THE CAUSE. “NEVER HAD A SERIOUS SHAKE.’ By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Sydney, June 9. Narromine, 305 miles west of Sydney, experienced another strong earth tremor. Mr. J. Nangle, Government astronomer, said that the shocks were due probably to geological faults. “We have never had a serious shake in Australia,” he said, “and we never will have one.”
A shock was felt at Narromine on Friday morning, May 27, and was heralded by an explosion similar to that of a land mine well underground. Buildings shook and rattled, while a heavy rumbling noise travelled underground. Earth tremors continued to scare the residents during the following week-end, four additional shocks being felt. The rumbling continued for a considerable time over a wider area than before. People rushed into the -streets when buildings shook. Crockery rattled, pictures swung out from the walls, plaster fell, chimneys crashed,' and bricks were split in walls. Tremors were also felt at Wellington. Previous earthquake shocks were recorded at Narromine on March 2 and May 20.
