WHEAT IMPORTS

GOVERNMENT IN FAVOUR

arrangements to be fair

SOUTHERN CROP FAILURE

PRICES SHOWING EFFECT STATEMENT BY MR. FORBES By Telegraph.—Press Wellington, Last NighL A request to import & limited amount of wheat has been favourably considered by the Government, and if fair arrangements can be made will be acceded to. “As a result of damage by heavy rains in the South Canterbury district in February it has become evident that this year there will be insufficient wheat of good millable quality available for the Dominion requirements,” says the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) in a statement to-night. “This fact is having an effect upon prices. Fowl wheat at present is being sold at prices slightly above prices which millers can offer for supplies for gristing. “Representations have been made to the Government, and the Wheat Marketing Board (representing millers and wheatgrowers) has asked to be allowed to import and distribute a limited quantity of milling wheat at prices which will -not involve an increase in the prices of flour and bread.

“The wheat would be in a large measure used for mixing with New Zealand grain and would thus enable a greater proportion of New Zealand wheat to be used for the production of good quality flour. Importation as suggested should at the same time assist poultry farmers to secure their requirements at prices lower than those at present ruling. “The request has received the favourable consideration of the Government and provided that the matter car; be arranged on such & basis as to deal fairly with the interests of all parties the suggestion may be acceded to.”
