One of the proposals under consideration by the Christchurch Tramway Board for improving its service is the use of pneumatic tyres for cars running on rails, says the Christchurch Times. This system has been adopted in a number of towns in other parts of the world, and has given satisfactory results by reducing the noise and vibration of the cars and ensuring greater comfort for the passengers. The trams are kept to the rails by means of a steel flange fitted to the pneumatic tyres. The use of Diesel engines for the board’s road services is also under consideration. Steps were taken recently by the executive of the New Zealand Public Service Association to ascertain whether the clause included in the Finance Act of last session giving the Government the right to dismiss summarily public servants guilty of disloyal acts was constitutional. At a recent meeting of the executive, the general treasurer reported that eminent legal advice had been obtained to the effect that the clause was quite constitutional.
