FIFTY YEARS AGO AND NOW
FROM TURBULENCE TO PEACE.
THE MANAIA JUBILEE.
A feature, unique perhaps in. the Empire these days, of the proceedings yesterday at the re-union luncheon at Manaia were the speeches, the first by European speakers dealing with the settlement and f progress of the Waimate Plains during the past 50 years, and reminiscent of the experiences of the settlers in the early and somewhat turbulent days of settlements by the white settlers; and the second, speeches by representatives of the Maori race, expressing pleasure at the wonderful progress made during the half century and gratitude for the co-operation with the pakeba and the friendly and sympathetic attitude of the pakeha towards the Maori. The Maori representatives spoke at length in their own picturesque and impressive language, being duly interpreted to a friendly and interested audience. Fifty years ago the races were at variance; war was in the air. To-day the races are at amity and .congratulating each other on the progress of settlement’ and the transformation which had been effected in so short a period. .It was a change striking and impressive.
