BRADBEER LEADING QUALIFIER. Ii- - — ,

RECORD TWICE BEATEN IN DAY. .Ta

A i perfect, windless day enabled amazing golf to be played in the British open championship. Despite the expectation that Sandwich, which is the longest championship course, would tax the competitor's’ hitting powers, .the record was twice smashed, R. Whitcombe first returning a . 70, compared with bogey 79. Half an hour later Eric ■Mcßuvie, aged 22, a Scottish amateur, who won the Irish championship, returned a 69, which Don Curtis, a longhitting Bournemouth professional, ’almost immediately equalled. Nevertheless Bradbeer, with a faultless 76, continued to lead. Meßuvie’s is regarded as the most impressive record-breaking performance. In soundness and accuracy Ije was almost perfect. He played straight down the middle-from , the tee and required only the iron for his second shots. His longest putt was eight yards.- Saracen, the American player, says that he has not seen a player of such promise at his age. The 110 With. scores- of 157 or under who qualified included Bradbeer, 70 and 71 (leader);. E. Mcßuvie, 75 and 69; Curtis, 76 and 69; R. Whitcombe, 76 ..anfl.7o;..MacDonald Smith, 73 and 76; Mifichell, 73 and 73; Armour, 75 and 71;. Duncan, 74 and 73; W. Hartley, 73 and 74; Padgham, 72 and 76; Havers, 71 and 77; Compston, 71 and 76; Sarazen, 73 and 7’6; Easterbrook, 75 and 74; Deltemagne, 72 and 78; Dobson, 72 and. 78; Twine, 75 and 76; Ray, 73 and 78; Michael Scott, 73 and 80; Robson, 79 and 74; Cotton, 76 and.7B; Torrence, 78 and 71; De Forest, 74 and 77; Miyamoto (Japanese), 73 and 79; Hodson, 82 and 71; Rex Hartley, 82 and 75. , ; " The quality of the golf is shown by the fact that* 27 players finished between 141 and 150. The qualifiers include 18 amateurs. Though the chief American challengers, Armour, Sarazen and MacDonald Smith, qualified comfortably, the day’s play raised British hopes of regaining the championship. *

Eric Mcßuvie had one brilliant round in the open event at Carnoustie last year. It is seldom that the leaders of the qualifying rounds win the big event, though Bobby Jones headed both in 1927. The holder, T. D. Armour, is evidently very close to his best and is likely to be the actual favourite. Apparently the Americans will have to rely on only three players —Armour, MacDonald Smith and Sarazen—and the chances of the British players are brighter than they have been for some years.
