BRITAIN’S RECOVERY
ENVY IN FRANCE. LOW COST OF LIVING. The London correspondent of a Paris newspaper expresses astonishment at the low.cost of living in Britain, where butter and eggs cost half as much as in France. He cites various prices, and then exclaims, perhaps enviously: “And these are the current rates in London, even though the pound is at 96 francs.’”
Britain’s “black week” of September, 1931, has served, he declares, to shake England out of her somnolent state. “Her eyes are wide open,” he adds. “Today everyone understands that the wellbeing of 'all depends on th© well-being of each.”
