GREAT MANGOLD CROPS

107 TONS TO THE ACRE.

JUDGING OF TOKO COMPETITIONS

An outstanding crop of mangolds averaging 107 tons 3cwt was a feature of the annual judging of root crops held under the allspices of. the. Toko branch of the Farmers’ Union in the Toko district yesterday. This remarkably good crop was grown by Mr. A. Marfell, Huinga. Heavier crops, notably the champion crop grown by Mr., J. B. Hine three seasons ago,, have, been frown in the Toko district, but it. is scarcely conceivable that better quality roots could be produced. . , Another outstanding- crop was- that grown by Mr. R. Kingan on Mr. L. Marfell’s adjoining property. It averaged 104 -tons 9cwt. . The competitions are usually judged by an officer of the Agricultural Department, but none being available this year Messrs M. Gernhoefer, G. Were (Toko) and H. Cleniow (Cardiff) acted as judges. It was dark before the last crop had been weighed. Details are: —

Until the judges actually reached the field, Mr. Claridge was undecided whe-ther-to enter his-No. 2 crop. The weighing was a revelation to most present regarding the estimation of carrot yields, for it secured second place in the competition with 58J tons'to the acre, whereas the crop (No. 1) upon which he rather pinned his faith turned the scales at only 48$ tons. It was one shrewd judge in the party who prevailed upon Mr. Claridge to enter the crop. Man golds,: Half ;acre. .

Mangolds, One Acre. , A. Marfell ..... 100 2 9 9J 218 J The judging party was provided with morning tea at the home of Mrs. H. Milne,-with lunch at the Huinga Hall and. with tea at the home of Mrs. A. Marfell. Crops in the Cardiff district will he judged on Monday. Messrs Gernhpefer and Were, with a. Cardiff representative, are to be judges.
