.MEETING OF THE TOWN BOARD..

The monthly meeting of the Opunake Town Board was held on Monday evening. Members present were Messrs. A. J. Brennan (chairman), W. E. Gunson, W. J. S. Dudley, D. Mourie, F. Hammond and S. Boyd. Messrs. Boyd and Hammond were appointed to meet the unemployment committee to discuss the clerical work. Mr. Hammond was appointed the board’s representative on the unemployment committee. The board decided to donate the hall hire for the recent Surf Club dance to the relief funds. The offer of the Girl Guides to take over the gardens . surrounding the soldiers’ memorial and keep them in order was accepted, members expressing appreciation of the offer. It was decided to recommend Mr. D. Mourie to the Marine Department as the Government representative on the Harbour Board.

Mr. R. Gooding .was appointed sanitary inspector to the board. The question of reducing th© wages of the staff was deferred till next meeting, when the estimates will come up for consideration.

A number 1 of suggestions were made tiy the foreman to assist with the distribution of the unemployed on works required in the town. Mr. Hammond suggested improvements in the recreation grounds, and it was decided to put two men to work in the grounds digging and cleaning round the shelter trees.

The foreman reported that work had been done on King Street, Allison Street, Main Road and Main Street. The fences round the sand-grass had been repaired. An average of 12 men had been employed under No. 5 scheme levelling the road at the hospital, cleaning out creeks, grubbing gorse, levelling and filling the drain on Ihaia Road. Pipes and concrete posts had 'been made. The pound-keeper reported that four head of cattle had been impounded and one horse released on the road. GIRL GUIDE AFFAIR'S. The monthly meeting of the Girl Guides Association was held on Monday. Those present were Mesdames F. Hammond (president), T. N. Watt, R. S. Jenkin, W. D. Richards, Cl. 11. Marcroft, D. Ross and Miss Mourie (secretary). Mrs. Watt reported that four trees had been donated by New Plymouth headquarters to celebrate the 21st birthday of guiding. The trees had been planted, one each in the Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist churchgrounds, and one in the District High School grounds. Miss Cook reported that five guides had passed for their cooking badge. Mrs. Watt stated that the guides were present at the guide service at St. Mary’s, Hawera, on May 29. Mr. Richards and Mrs. Baylis were thanked for giving their cars to convey the .guides to Hawera. A men’s hockey club lias 'been formed at Opunakc. The following officers were elected; Patron, Mr. R.
