ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

MATCHES IN NEW PLYMOUTH

REVIEW'OF. SATURDAY’S GAMES. BEST EXHIBITIONS OF SEASON. - • ■ .■•./’'■■’ • i ■■ (By “Centre.”) The association football match between Albion and Caledonians jit Western Park on, Saturday was without question the finest game seen thia season, and in a hard battle for supremacy Albion emerged victors by 4. goals to 1, a score which somewhat flattered Albion. Fast, keen football, with the ball swinging from end to end, produced a game without a dull moment, and will do much to popularise the code.

Albion's custodian brought off some good saves which compensated for his earlier misjudgment which gave Caledonians their only goal Randell was the finest back on the field and repeatedly saved his side when sorely pressed. Walbran had an off day, miskicking badly on occasions. Parkinson end Berry played excellent games and kept the forwards well supplied. Hilton was the only flaw in Albion’s defence. Bannister and McDoull on the wings played their first games and proved * decided asset to the team. Ibbetson, Upshall and Mclvor, the other forwards, were always prominent. Shepherd in goal for Caledonians played well and could not be blamed for the goals scored. C. Henderson was the pick of the backs; his clearing and judicious placing were excellent. The halves were very sound in attack and defence and organised some fine movements. • .‘■St-

Gardner, Hill and Rae combined very effectively and were unfortunate in not scoring- on several occasions. Davies played a sound game at outside right until he was forced to retire early in the second spell through the recurrence of a leg injury. Talking and disputing decisions some-i what marred the game, and it was unfortunate that a line umpire should enter into these discussions.

‘Tacking” was again evident bn Saturday, and “Centre” was surprised to see an Albion stalwart who has turned out regularly each week dropped in favour of a new player. Moturoa continued their winning way by defeating Pirates to the tune of J goals to nil and are now lying second to Albion in the championship table. They held the upper hand for the major portion of the game and it. was only owing to the stubborn, defence of the Pirates’ rear division that the score was not greater. . . _ Kenny in goal'for Motirroa acquitted., himself well, while Bensley and Johns were safe at back. The half-line were a treat to watcF and held the opposing forwards well in check. J. Thompson’s goal was a fine effort. Smith played his usual tireless'game but was held in check by the opposing half. The Moturoa front rank' is still handicapped by the lack of scoring men. Atkinson'was' 7 safe in goal'for Pirates and those shots which passed, gave hijn little opportunity. ■ Leans was the better of the backs. His partner, Anderson, though sound, did not appear at ease.

Davies at left half was in great form form and proved a thorn to Smith, the opposing winger, while the Wingroye brothers were steady. The forwards had little opportunity to assert themselves. The game wag played in a fine sporting spirit. ' ’ ' _■ Owing-to the surplus of players in the senior, division a sub-committee haa been formed with a view" to-creating a junior competition. It is probable tnat many players are losing the .opportunity of enjoying a game through possibly not being up to senior standard, and it is anticipated that several teams could be . formed. With -this in view, a meeting has been arranged for next Monday, at which all players and those interested are invited to attend.
