SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. On Monday evening the monthly meeting of the Normanby school committee was held in the school room, there being present Mr. W. Bennett (chairman), Mrs. W. G. Gane, Messrs. J. Howe-Giles, C. Hardway, W. Burton and D. N. Cowie. The headmaster (Mr. T. Taylor) reported that the roll, remained steady and the average attendance was good. Nuise Small examined all the children prior to the visit of the health officer. The dental clinic had visited the school after the holidays and satisfactory arrangements had been made regarding the children. Mr. Morrison, probationary assistant, had taken up his duties at the commencement of the term. The headmaster expressed appreciation of the enthusiastic manner in which Mr. N. Gray had carried out his duties while he had been a member of the school staff.

The secretary reported that he had attended the last meeting of the South Taranaki branch of the Educational Association and that the remits sent from the Normanby committee had been very sympathetically received, but with regard to the objection by the committee to the present system of rationing teachers the association could see no other way out of the difficulty. The association also strongly disapproved of the system of block voting and decided to forward to Wellington a suggestion that such voting be entirely prohibited.

The entertainment committee reported that it had met the teaching staff and thoroughly discussed the plans for the forthcoming concert. It was decided that this should take place towards the encl of the present term and should consist, if possible, entirely of items given by the children.

It was decided to give Mr. Webber the use of the school pony paddock as night accommodation for his cow in return for his services as caretaker of the paddock. Considerable discussion took place regarding the possibility of engag-

ing unemployed men in the work of improving the school ’ grounds. It was finally decided to approach the chairman of the Normanby Town Board to see it it were possible to obtain the services of two or 1 three of the board’s relief workers. , . nr rr The headmaster stated that Mr. nD. Hughes had generously promised a large number of gladoji bulbs to be planted. in the school gardens, _and Messrs. -Bennett and Burton agreed _to see to the very necessary top-dressing of the gardens. The chairman stated that two euchre parties had been held and as a result the school funds had benefited considerably and he desired to specially thank Messrs. W. Burton, W. T.' Hair, Palmer and Galloway brothers, who_ had generously given a number of prizes. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr and Mrs. Norman Gane are visitin<r Mrs. B. Gane at “The Willows.” Miss Thelma Gibson, Mountain Road, has returned from New Plymouth. Mrs. MeVicar and Miss Doreen McVicar are the guests of Mrs. B. Gane. Mrs. H. W. Glentworth was able to return to her home on Saturday.
