WORK ON STREETS AND PARKS. TARRING OF THE FOOTPATHS. The monthly meeting of the Elthain Borough Council was held last night. The overseer reported that portion of London Street from the railway line ,to the bacon factory .was top-dressed with Colfix and. chip metal. The bend in Castle Street near the dump section was scarified and relaid with an elevated curve. The corner leading into the Mangawliero Road from Castle Street was repaired. The approaches leading into different streets off tar sealed roads were ripped up, graded, metalled and tar sealed. They included Meuli, Stauners, Taylor, Kegworth Streets and Conway Road. Concrete watertables were put down in Biidge Street. During the dry weather the water pressure in the town was below the average owing to the excessive usage of garden hoses. • The supply at the intake was well in excess of the carrying capacity of the main river. The pressure at night time was 951 b per square inch but during the day was down to 551 b. Unemployment work was being carried out. Twenty-four men were on the borough’s books. Sixteen men were on farm work and the balance were being found work about the borough. The pay allocation was not sufficient to grant the men their full quota of days and a cut had to be made accordingly.

A protection bank was being put along a portion of the west side of Taumata Park to protect the land from river erosion. The woodwork guard ■rail' approaches at Mountain Road, bridge were painted white. The caretaker’reported that the work done at Taumata Park consisted of hedge trimming, weeding flower beds and paths, cutting grass in the bush section and mowing football and hockey grounds, racing track' and grandstand lawn. Depressions on the hockey ground were filled with earth.

The inspector reported that traffic had been' well conducted. One information was issued against a youth for riding a bicycle on. the footpath. This practise was increasing, and it would be necessary to issue further informations unless the offences ceased. Five notices were issued to people to have hedges trimmed and rubbish removed from the roadside. AH heavy traffic licenses had been collected. Four driving licenses were Issued, making the total for the year 350. One permit was issued for the alteration of a building. Fees collected for dog tax amounted to £24, the number, of dogs registered being 76. Ten head of stock were impounded. The health inspector reported that one case of 'diphtheria was notified during the month. The patient was removed to isolation hospital at Hawera. The gas manager reported that owing to reduced water pressure it was frequently necessary" to use the gas engine in lieu of the Pelton wheel. A blockage on the outlet of the regenerator flues reduced the heat on the bed considerably, and until this was located the make per ton dropped well below normal.

The treasurer reported that £2796 was received during March and that the expenditure was £2120. The district fund showed a debit of £720.

The reserves committee reported that the ' caretaker had been authorised to purchase sufficient grass seed for the old tennis court, Taumata Park, that prices were being obtained for the building of a bathroom fitted with a New Zealand porcelain bath and gas appliances in the grandstand building at Taumata Park. The ladies’ hockey club had been granted the use of the hockey ground at Taumata Park for the season, with the right to charge on May 10. The men’s hockey club has also been granted the use of Taumata Park. It was recommended that a survey of the back sections of the cemetery be considered with the estimates.

The works committee .reported that the matter of street drainage in Castle Street had been referred to the chairman and overseer with power to act and that the matter of obtaining heavy traffic street signs had been referred to the overseer and town clerk with power to act.

The town hall and pictures committee reported that the tender of H. J. Drabble has been accepted for adjustment of the electrical equipment in the town hall and that the plumbing work and painting at the town hall has been satisfactorily completed. The doors, facings, sills and stairs outside were to be painted in addition to the contract. The finance committee reported that application was being made to the Public Trustee for a renewal of the municipal building redemption loan, subject to the terms of the precedent consent. The committee recommended that the sub-divisional plan submitted by Mrs. Jenkins be signed and sealed by the Mayor and town clerk; that the New Plymouth harbour rate be paid out of the general account and levied later with the ordinary rates; that the agreement with the New Zealand Railways for an extraordinary water supply be approved.

ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS.

The annual sports at Huiroa on Thursday will constitute a record for the district in respect of entries, which considerably exceed those of any other year. There are 45 entrants in the chopping events alone. A humorous feature will be a goat race for children.

The second of a series of Catholic euchre parties will be held in the Medina, Stratford, on Tuesday commencing at 8 o’clock. Good prizes are offered and supper will be provided.

Dancers are reminded to reserve Monday, May 9, for the Eltham tennis ball, the. leading social event of the season.

Drapery, footwear and fancy goods will be offered at the Central Mart, Broadway, Stratford, on Tuesday afternoon. The auctioneers (Messrs. Peterson and McTsaac) advertise that the offering includes 70 serge costume and 'dress lengths.
