EXPLANATION TO LADY HOUSTON NAVY LEAGUE SEEKS DONATION, By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. London, April 16. In reply to Lady Houston’s offer of £160,000 for national defence, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Neville Chamberlain) to-day. said Parliament alone was in a position to' allocate the resources of the Exchequer for any particular object; therefore it was impossible to accept gifts for expenditure on particular services, though he appreciated the spirit prompting the offer. The Navy League has telegraphed Lady Houston pointing out that onetwentieth of her proffered gift would enable tire league to sway puoii. opinion till it was realised that England, .was in deadly peril.
