Lieutenant Massie, testifying in his own defence m the charges of murdei arising from the lynching of a young Japanese, told the story of the rape of his wife last fall, of which the slain man was suspected. ■ Mr. Darrow announced that he would, raise the question of .sanity. This is believed to indicate that Massie will admit the killing but plead extenuating circumstances of temporary insanity. Massie sobbed as he testified, and Mrs. Fortescue, his wife’s mother, wept.
