PUNGAREHU DISTRICT NEWS

TENNIS CLUB DANCE SUCCESS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The Pungarehu Tennis Club on Wednesday night held a dance in the hall. The members spent a great deal of time in preparation, with the result that, with the aid of tree ferns and other greenery, the interior of the building was completely transformed. Every corner was adorned with overhanging fronds, whilst the stage was delightfully decorated with greenery and bowls of chrysanthemums. The tables of the supper room were covered with white and blue effects with numerous vases of flowers to relieve. By 9 p.m. the floor was crowded with dancers who had faced the stormy elements without. Pungarehu’s hall has rapidly gained in popularity, and, judging by the appreciative remarks made regarding the excellent floor, future functions will be more popular still. Excellent music was supplied by Vinsen’s Ambassadors, and the programme contained both new and old-time dances. When the last dance was played at 2.30 a.m. the floor was still crowded. Extras were played by Miss E. Gilhooley, Miss A. Duggan, Mrs. F. Grinlinton and Mr. A. Roots. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs. T. Brophy, R. B. Fleming and A. Roots. Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Mr. and Miss Broughton, and by Mr. Bensley and Mrs. Reid. A cake presented by Mrs. E. H. Gray was won by Mr. P. Kelly, whilst another competition was won by Mr. C. Sole. Lady members provided a very generous supper, thus assisting the club materially from a financial standpoint. A tennis match arranged between Okato and the local team had to be abandoned on account of the boisterous weather.

Miss M. Newport, who underwent an operation, recently, is progressing favourably. .
