WEST END SCHOOL AFFAIRS

BUSINESS OF THE COMMITTEE.

The West End school committee met on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs. W. H. Jones (chairman), C. 0. Berg, F. Parker , 0. McLean, F. Brunton, J. E. Sbimmin (headmaster), and H. J. Abram (hon. secretary). The cub and scouts committee comprising Miss Mynott, Mesdames Brash, Charters, Hall, Assistant-Scoutmaster Hedges, and lady-cubmaster Elliott sat in conjunction with the committee and held their meeting prior to the school meeting. , ' The lady cubmaster reported that the ■pack had met each Monday during the month, except Easter Monday. The attendances were 18, 22, 10 and 27. Three new boys had joined during the month. The sports were held last Saturday in spite of the wet, and thanks were offered.. to the committee. The ball and skipping ropes had been purchased and were now much in use. The scoutmaster reported, that the attendances had; been very fair. The Westown troop had been invited down for the evening, but the West End. attendance had been below the mark. Second patrol leader Hodder, having met with an accident, was in hospital with several ribs fractured. The scoutmaster brought to the notice of the committee the fact that Mr. Lovell had willingly trained and passed eevteral boys for their cyclist’s badge. The sports were held on Saturday. The boys of the West End troop competed but Fitzroy and Westown carried off most of the honours. Thanks were passed to the retiring committee for its loyal support in the past year. Authority was granted for the purchase of rope. The visiting committee to the cubs spoke in enthusiastic terms of the lady cubmaster, who had. an average of 22 cubs to look after. It was suggested that one of the. experienced girl guides should be appointed to act as assistant to the lady cubmaster, Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Brash were appointed a' visiting committee for the ensuing month for the cubs and Messrs. Brunton and Parker for the scouts. The headmaster reported for the month as follows: Number on roll 417; average attendance, 303.2. The school had been visited by Mr. McKay, agriculture instructor. Schemes for the year’s work were thoroughly gone' over. Mr. Middleweek had' notified his appointment as head of a Maori school in the region of Doubtless Bay. The school was represented at the school sports on March 24 by a team. The school came third. Every event was carried out expeditiously. Permission was granted the West End Old Girls’ Basketball team to use the gymnasium; providing they paid for the lighting. In reply to a letter from the Scouters and Cubbers Association the committee decided that 10s would cover the damage done to the goal posts. The rural science report received was an excellent one and the headmaster and staff were congratulated on. it. The chairman expressed his appreciation of the help the committee had given him during the year. Ho was pleased to know that six of the committee.were continuing. To Mr. McLeod, who had so ably supplied the light and amiable spirit in the committee, he regretted to have to bid farewell. It was the same with Mr. Mdsaacs. The chairman also, conveyed to the secretary the committee’s thanks for tho work he had done for the school. Mr. C. 0. Berg spoke on the merit of the chairman, who had completed 10 years as a committeeman. The school owed a debt of gratitude to him for watching tho interests of the children.
