LOSS TO SHOPKEEPERS
NO INSURANCE AGAINST RIOT. COST NOT BORNE BY COMPANIES, “The position with regard to the insurance and plate-glass windows smashed in Auckland is that the loss falls on the owners or occupiers of the property and not on the insurance companies,” stated a prominent insurance company officer in New Plymouth, last night. “The ordinary plate-glass policy does not cover loss or damage caused, by a riot or a civil commotion. With regard to the stock and goods destroyed or looted, no insurance cover would be held to provide against this loss.”
Buildings and contents destroyed by fire arising from, or caused by riot or civil commotion were not covered under the ordinary fire insurance policy unless protection against this extra risk had been applied, for and an additional premium paid for the extension of the cover.
Very few policies issued by insurance companies were extended, to cover those extra risks, as the extra extension was very rarely asked for by th« insuring public.
