CROQUET SEASON ENDS

1 PATEA’S DISAPPOINTING YEAR. It was decided to terminate the present season’s activities forthwith at a meeting of members of the Patea Croquet Club held at the pavilion on Thursday. Some members were prevented from attending by the bitter cold. Mrs. J- A. Drummond presided. Considerable disappointment at the small interest taken in croquet during the season was expressed. GENERAL ITEMS. . For being found in the Albion Hotel after hours on March 17, Wilson Owen and Robert Louis Prouse were each fined £1 and 10s costs by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Patea Court on Thursday. The offenders were found in the sitting room of the hotle by Constable W Kelly at about 10.45 p.m. and there were empty liquor glasses before them. Both offenders pleaded not guilty, stating that they had entered the hotel to see & ■boarder on business.

Rahira Broughton, a Maori woman, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months if called upon, by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Patea Court on Thursday for stealing a pair of trousers valued at 15s from June Wiki on March 31. An order was made for the return of the trousers, and the magistrate intimated that the offender would be sent to gaol if any further trouble occurred.

Judgment for plaintiff by default was given by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Patea Court on Thursday when E. Lauert proceeded against P. Marsh for the sum of Ils 6d (costs 8s). On a judgment summons Thomas Broughton was ordered to pay the Farmers’ Cooperative Society of New Zealand Ltd. £2 7s 3d forthwith, in default two days’ imprisonment.

Complaint was made at a meeting of the committee of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club on Thursday that the emergency key at the Syme Hut had been removed by unauthorised persons. Mr. Hooker stated that the matter would receive the attention of the South committee.

The holding of trips at four-weekly, instead of three-weekly intervals until s'ki-ing activities commence was decided upon by the committee of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club on Thursday evening.

Congratulations to the newly-formed Opunake Mountain Club and an offer of co-operation if at any time required were extended by the committee of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club on Thursday evening.

Club trips arranged by the committee of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club on Thursday evening are: April 24 and 25, working bee and trip from Dawson Falls hostel; May 15, Meremere trip; June 12, mountain trip; July 9 and 10, annua! “at home” at Dawson Falls hostel. No Fraser Road football team will be entered for the Hawera Wednesday competition this year unless greater interest is shown in the district. This was decided on Thursday night at the club’s annual meeting, at which it was also decided that the club’s position be reviewed in twelve months’ time.

Appreciation of the services to the club of Mr. G. D. Oliver, who has been transferred to New Plymouth, was voiced by several members of the committee of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club on Thursday evening, when Mr. Oliver’s resignation was accepted with regret. At a social evening at Hawera,last night a presentation was made by the club to Mr. Oliver. Mr. B. Haybittie was appointed to fill the vacancy on the committee.

The annual junior seven-a-side football tournament conducted by the Alton Football Club will be held on Mr. A. J. Gibbs’ property, Alton, on Wednesday, May 4. The trophies include the Alton Challenge Cup and seven gold medals for the winning team. The meeting and demonstration arranged by the Hawera branch of the New Zealand Labour Party to take place in Regent Street to-night will be held in the winter show buildings. Messrs. W. J. Jordan and W. E. Parry, the Auckland members of Parliament who were to have addressed the meeting, have been called north by the trouble in their constituencies, and Messrs. D. W. Coleman, the Labour member for Gisborne, and F. Langstone, the Waimarino representative, will address the meeting in their place.
