HURRICANE IN TONGA

WORST FOR MANY YEARS.

BANANA CROP DAMAGED.

Particulars of the severe hurricane wliich. was experienced, in the Tongan group on March 13 were brought by passengers and officers of the Tofua, which arrived at Auckland on Tuesday, after her last round trip of the Islands. The hurricane caused considerable damage to the banana crop at Vavau. Nearly all the fruit was blown off and in many cases palms were uprooted. It la stated the banana crop is. likely to be delayed for about six months. Many coconut trees were blown down and houses and native dwellings were destroyed. The hurricane evidently struck the island suddenly during the festivities held to celebrate the birthday of Queen Salote. For some time it was thought that the royal residence might be destroyed, but prompt precautions saved it. The hurricane was also experienced at Niuafou, another island in the Tongan group, where it was reported to be one of the worst encountered for many years. However, Tonga, Tabu, Haapai and other islands in the group escaped.
