DISTURBANCE AT DUNEDIN
SIX MEN BEFORE THE COURT. THEIR REMAND IN CUSTODY. By Telegraph,—Press Association. Dunedin, April 13. As the result of the. unemployed disturbance on Monday six men were arrested in the early hours of this morning and later appeared in the Police Court charged with inciting lawlessness. They were remanded in custody for a week. They were Robert John Eady, aged 26, William Foote (30), An Australian, Harry McDonald (32), England, Michael O’Rorke (28), Scotland, Arthur R. Proctor (29), England, and William Ronald Winton (26). When bail was applied for the police stated that some of the men had been PROVISION FOR UNEMPLOYED QUESTIONS IN PARLIAMENT. Wellington, Last night. A request that steps should be taken to relieve distress and prevent further disturbances in Dunedin, was made m the the House of Representatives to-day by Mr. F. Jones (Lab., Dunedin South) and Mr. J. W. Munro (Lab., Dunedin North). In reply the Minister in charge of unemployment (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) said the position was receiving every attention. He pointed out that the amount made available for relief in Dunedin was in proportion to the number of. registered unemployed. A statement issued by the Mayor (Mr. R. S. Black) had refuted the suggestion that the trouble was due to starvation. Replying to Mr. W. J. Jordan (Lab., Manukau), the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) said the Government and the Unemployment Board, with the co-operation, of local organisations were continuing to provide to the ’fullest extent of their resources unemployment relief in return for work performed. The Government did not intend to adopt a policy of making payment in cash or kind without requiring work to be done. The Unemployment Amendment Bill at pre’sent before Parliament, Mr. Forbes added, made increased provision for finance and organisation, and he was confident it would be possible to make reasonable provision for the needs of the people.
