MEETING OF BAND MEMBERS. A general- meeting- of the Kaponga Brass Band was held on Tuesday when Mr. D. Malone presided over a good attendance. Stating that.the main business of the meeting was to discuss the future of the band, Air. Malone said he was pleased with the performance of the band at the contest in Stratford. Although not at the top of the ladder the band had done creditably and he thought the conductor had reason to be proud of it. The band had been handicapped in the quickstep as several ne.w players had had to -be introduced at. the last moment. The drum-major (Mr. L. A. Wells) and the conductor (Air. H. A. Gallagher) both spoke, the former outlining the judge’s remarks on the military portion of the quickstep and the latter detailing the musical judge’s remarks on the match and the test selection. ■ Many points were noted for future guidance. The secretary- (Mr. Wells) stated that he desired to resign his position. He had held the position for some time. Members were emphatic, however, in asking him to reconsider his decision as they felt he was doing excellent work for the band. {Subsequently Mr. Wells stated he would continue for another year. GENERAL AND PERSONAL. The proposed friendly hockey match betweeu Stratford and Kaponga. which was to have taken place at Kaponga today has, been postponed a week. A working bee has been arranged to put finishing touches' to the playing' area, which has been much improved 1 as the result of two previous working bees. Miss P. Anderson, cubmistress, was greeted in the early morning of April 1 by a full muster of the cubs, in uniform, who paraded on her doorstep. Hawing in mind the day was the first of April, Miss Anderson advanced somewhat sceptically but received a pleasant surprise when Pack Leader Leo Carrington handed her a cup, saucer and plate with birthday wishes from the cubs. Aliss B. Reesby, Hawera, is spending a fortnight’s holiday in Kaponga with Mr. and Mrs. A. Denham junr., Eltham Road.. Airs. J. J. Lilly is spending a short holiday with her daughter at New Plymouth. Airs. A. Gilbert, who has been visiting friends in E'gmont Village, has returned home.

A challenge for the Tait Stars from the Okaiawa club was played on Tuesday, when a drawn game gave the holders the right to retain the trophy. Results, Okaiawa mentioned first, are: Mesdames Williams and Betts 18 versus Mesdames Tattersall and Brewer 26, Mrs. Hollis and Miss Washer 26 versus Mesdames Evans and Tyack 18. The Stratford Croquet Club is holding a special tournament at Stratford which commenced yesterday and the following local players are representing the Kaponga chib: 'Mesdames Evans, R. G. Cook, Williams, Tyack, J. Gardner and H. Gallagher. Mr. Thomas Graham, of India and Shanghai, who is re-visiting Kaponga after aft absence of eeven years, is the guest of Mr. A. E. Gallagher, who visited Mr. Graham’s Ulster home city after seeing four years’ service in the Great War. In the Kaponga Town Hall at 8 o’clock to-night Mr. Graham will give his educational lantern lecture with special slides illustrating trials and triumphs of faith amidst scenes of British and Indian patriotism and historic wonders in India and Shanghai. Mr. Graham, who spent years in Ireland as a Methodist home missionary, and who was christened in the old Church of Ireland, is specially interested in the 1500th anniversary of the landing of St. Patrick as a missionary in Ireland, which will be celebrated on June 9 in Armagh Cathedral, and he hopes to be able to visit Ireland on that occasion.
