TARANAKI RIFLE MEETING

CONCLUSION OF BELT SERIES A ROBERTSON (HAWERA) WINNER. GIRL WINS TYRO GH'AMPIONSiBIIP. NEW PLYMOUTH’S TEAMS’ MATCH. The Taranaki Rifle Association’s ■championship belt was won .for the third 1 time yesterday by President A. G. Robertson (Hawera) at. the conclusion of the championship prize meeting at the Rewa Rewa range, New Plymouth. Robertson was two points ahead of his club mate, G. H. Cross, and J. G. McCarthy (Kaponga), who picked up splendidly in the last two matches, dropping only three points, was six points away third. The champion shot consistently throughout the meeting, performing especially well at the short ranges, the aggregate for which he won easily. His range totals were 47 at 300yds., 47 at 500yds., 47 and 44 at 600yds., 48 at 800 yds. and 45 at 900yds. He was never out of the prize list’in any of the championship matches at the meeting. Robertson won the championship previously in 1925 and 1929.

One of the most noteworthy performances of the meeting was that of Miss P. Hogg, who won the tyro championship aggregate. It was Miss Hogg’s first season of clufo shooting and she made an aggregate of 268, which would, have gained her a place in the prize-winners in the A grade aggregate had the tyro aggregate not been of more value. J. F. McCarthy shot well at the long ranges to win the long range aggregate.' With a 44 at 600 yards on Saturday he was counted out of the prize list in the Te Kuiti match, but he scored 49 at 800 yards and 48 at 900 yards to give him an aggregate of 141, two more than that of J. Vinten (Hajvera), who was second. Conditions yesterday were much better for shooting than they were on Saturday, when a fishtail rear wind chopped from side to side disconcertingly. The wind was across the range from the left yesterday and was moderately steady. The champion teams’ match was won by New Plymouth A by seven points from Hawera. The winners scored the excellent total of 487 of a possible of 525. The high standard of their shooting was enhanced by the fact that three of the five were .tyros. New Plymouth B were third, five points behind Hawera.

The match consisted of seven shots over the ranges 300, 500 and 600 yards, and at. the conclusion of the first distance New Plymouth A were leading New Plymouth B by five points, with Hawera a point away. S. G. Higgs had scored a possible and New Plymouth A had dropped only nine. points altogether. Hawera had the best total at 500 yards, two points ahead of New . Plymouth A and four ahead of Kaponga A, but were still behind New Plymouth A. 'The leaders increased their advantage at the last range by notching three more points than Hawera, who were a point better than New Plymouth B. The best individual totals were made by Higgs 100, J. Robinson and G. E. Pearson (New Plymouth) 99, and G. E. Putt (New Plymouth) 98. Mr. H. McGahey. was signal officer in place of Mr. C. H. Moore.
