LONDON AWARDS AGAIN VARY. “EXCEPTIONALLY FINE DISPLAY.” < ■ The London awards in connection with the Waverley A. and P. Association’s fat lamb competition were received by cable in Hawera yesterday by the Farmers’ Co-op. Organisation Society of New Zealand, Ltd., through its London agents, Hayes, Paine and Knowlden. The comment that the lambs were an exceptionally fine display was included in the cable and the information given that the whole parcel sold for 7£d a lb. This price is £d'to Id over the current rate for ordinary lamb, and must be considered highly satisfactory. The London placings are: — Pen No. 21, F. Ell (Maverley) ....... 1 Pen. Luptom (Waverley) . 4 It was acknowledged at the time that the lambs were an exceptionally even lot, and Mr. Deighton experienced considerable difficulty in separating a number of the pens. DEPARTING STATIONMASTER. MR. J. F. STRATFORD FAREWELLED Business managers and friends of Mr. J. F- Stratford, stationmaster at Patea, took the opportunity on a recent evening to wish him farewell prior to his departure for Helensville. Mr. Stratford was presented with a hatbox and suitcase by the chairman (Mr A. T. Christensen). In making the presentation on behalf of the station staff and friends the chairman referred to Mr. Stratford’s courtesy and willingness to assist everyone doing business with the railways. He wished both Mr. and Mrs. Stratford every happiness at Helensville. ' , . Other speakers included the Mayor (Mr. F. Ramsbottom), Mr. A. N. Williams (manager, Patea Farmers’ Co-op. freezing works) and Mr. A. H. Hodge (manager, South Taranaki Shipping company). Mr. Stratford thanked those present for their generous praise and presents. He left Patea with considerable regret and assured them that he would not forget the kindness he had been shown by everyone. ' A welcome was extended Mr. A. Maxwell, who succeeds Mr. Stratford. Mr. Stratford leaves to-day for Helensville. CONCERT AT MEREMERE. HAWERA PARTY ENTERTAINS. An enthusiastic reception by an audience which filled the Meremere Hall on Wednesday evening was given a Hawera concert party arranged by Mr. H. N. Lester. Vocal and instrumental music comprised the programme, at the conclusion of which Mr. G. W. Williams expressed thanks to the party on behalf of the audience. The Rev. E. S. Emmitt also spoke. The programme consisted of the following items:—Overture, string orchestra; violin solos, Mr. V. MartinLevorson; songs, Mrs. Antoni Bonetti; monologues, Mr. C. J. MteFadyen; duets on tenor banjo and violin, Messrs. Antoni • Bonetti and Martin-Levorson j instrumental quartettes, Mrs. Bonetti, Messrs. Bonetti, H. N. Lester and Martin-Levorson; ’cello solos, Mr. Lester; violin quartettes, Messrs. Bonetti, Martin-Levorson, A. Sargeson and W. Clarke; and flute solos, Master Reeve Williams. KAPONGA GENERAL ITEMS. A painful mishap befel Mr. A. Williams, lower Manaia Road, on Monday evening. A bull which had become entangled in a fence was being released by him when it charged him, knocking him over and inflicting severe flesh wounds in both legs and breaking several ribs. The sufferer was taken to the Kaponga cottage hospital, where J e is progressing as well as can be expected. » Mr. J. Harper, Palmer Road, has had ' to re-enter the Hawera hospital. Messrs. J. W. H. and N. Gardner are visiting Palmerston North. The Kaponga Municipal Band has entered for the quickstep and the test selection in the Taranaki band contest at Stratford on April 7. Practices by members of the Kaponga Amateur Theatrical Society for the comedy drama ‘‘Oh! Mrs. Bluggins!” are well launched and good progress is being made with the first act. The second act, which provides for the inclusion of many more players, will be put in hand in a few weeks’ time,
