ANNUAL EXCURSION IN MARCH.

PATEA DECIDES ON WANGANUI.

A .meeting was held at Patea to decide whether the annual school picnic should take the form of an excursion to some other centre or whether the Patea Domain or beach should be favoured. The Rev. C. Aker presided. It was decided to have an excursion to Wanganui. • 1 The claims of the beach and its attractions were stressed by Messrs. F. Locker and D. Roots, who were deputised to represent the Patea Seaside Improvement Society. A carnival with speed boat thrills was to be held at the beach on February 17 the deputation stated, and should prove an ideal outing and attraction for the children and parents. Messrs. Hepworth and Queenan, representing the Freezing Workers’ Union, regretted that arangementa with the freezing company would not permit of the freezing workers participating on February 17 as longer notice was required. 1 After lengthy discussion, during which a strong appeal for keeping the picnic in Patea was made by Mr. L. P. Clark, it was decided that the picnic should take the form of an excursion on March 9 and that Wanganui should be visited. The distance to New Plymouth was put forward when the attractions of Pukekura Park were stressed.

The head teacher reported the roll to be 61, the same as in last year, as five new pupils had been admitted to take the place of five who had left. There were no cases of sickness to report. 1 The secretary, reporting on the grounds, eaid that of the two new plantations only one was progressing favourably; the other had lost at least half the young pines planted in it. It was decided to hold the school picnic at Opunake beach on Friday. The teacher was instructed to send out subscription lists to gather enough money to defray the cost of a lorry, two cases of apples, hot water and prizes for the children. HAWERA OPERA HOUSE TALKIES. JOAN CRAWFORD IN DRAMA. "Within the Law,” which will be the attraction at the Hawera Opera House to-night and to-morrow, is Joan Crawford's first dramatic starring vehicle, and is of particular interest as the first dialogue film version of Bayard Veiller’s stage play "Within the Law.” Miss Crawford was given her opportunity to play the tragic heroine in this drama in recognition of her splendid portrayal in "Our Blushing Brides,” and other successes. In essaying this difficult role, Miss Crawford follows in the footsteps of Alice Joyce and Norma Talmadge, who played it on the silent screen in 1917 and 19-33 respectively. Robert Armstrong and Marie Prevost, (head the supporting cast.
