proposal for new SYSTEM I PROVISION FOR FARM STUDENTS DEPUTATION TO WAIT ON SENATE With the object of placing before the Senate of the New Zealand University proposals for improving and widening the system of awarding Taranaki scholarships, Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, and Mr. W. H. Moyea, principal of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School, left for Dunedin yesterday morning. The scholarships are awarded to postprimary students in Taranaki from the Opaku reserve endowment, the accumulated funds of which amounted to £28,293 in March last. The Senate will commence its meeting at Dunedin to-day. Some time ago a conference of interested education authorities was held at Stratford, where a scheme was adopted for submission to the Senate, it being decided that a deputation in support should be sent from Taranaki. The resolution of the conference asked the Senate to seek the approval of the Minister to the following amendments of the regulations governing Taranaki scholarships, designed to make them conform with modern requirements ; — (a) To provide one scholarship per annum, to be awarded on the University Entrance Scholarship papers in literary subjects in conformity with the appended schedule; the value of such scholarship to be £6O per annum, plus university lecture fees. (b) To provide one scholarship per annum, to be awarded on the University Entrance Scholarship papers in mathematical and scientific subjects, in conformity with the appended schedule; the value of. such scholarship to be £6O

per annum, plus university lecture fees. (c) To provide three agricultural scholarships, to be awarded annually, each to be tenable at Massey College for one year. These shall be awarded on an examination to be controlled by the principal of Massey College in conformity with a schedule of studies to be compiled to his satisfaction and to be published in the calendar; such examination will represent the reasonable result of four years’ training in agriculture in a secondary school. The value of each scholarship shall be £6O per annum, plus lecture fees. (d) To provide from the residue of the annual income from the endowment and accrued capital for scholarships to be awarded in conformity with the existing regulations governing Taranaki scholarships, .provided that the annual value of such scholarships shall be £6O, plus lecture fees. The number of these scholarships shall be such as will absorb at least three-quarters of the residue of the income of the fund after provision has been made for the maintenance of scholarships under clauses (a), (b) and (c). Scholarships (a), (b) and (d) shall be tenable for three years, provided that the senate may at its discretion extend the tenure of a scholarship for one year longer in the case of a scholar who has satisfactorily fulfilled the conditions prescribed. Every application for such extension shall be forwarded through the chairman of the professorial board of the college to which the scholar belongs, and shall be accompanied by a certificate from the chairman that the professorial board approves of the proposal to extend the scholarship. Schedule of marks proposed for scholarships (a) and (b): — (a) English, 600; French, 400; geography, 300; Latin, 600; history, 300; economics, 300. A candidate must present himself in English, Latin and French, 1 together with iiwo of the subjects history, geography and economics. ■(b) Mathematics, 600; magnetism and electricity, 300; heat and light, 300; mechanic's, 300; home science, 300; geography, 300; chemistry, 300; botany, 300, agriculture, 300; ’economics, 300. A candidate must present himself in mathematics and chemistry, together with four others of the remaining subjects.
