I , The Whareroa school closed on Friday for the Christinas holidays. Owing to a very broken year there was no formal break-up. The year’s work terminated very quietly in reading and reciting and a show of work to which only the pupils were invited. The teacher reported that the work had been done satisfactorily and she is looking forward to a good year in 1932. Swimming certificates have been won by Joan Oliver and Jack Nelson.

For attendance the gold star was won by Horscoe George, Hilda Holdener and Veta Chapple, and the star and a second certificate by Eric Gib<son, Victor Chapple and Olive Smith. A number of children attended the Red Cross, lectures given by Sister Inglis, Hawera, and they did very good work indeed. The school won a prize in the junior Red Cross examination—a book for the school library. i

Ensilage and hay-making is being carried on all over the Whareroa district. Every year sees a larger amount of ensilage and less hay. A great number of the crops are reported asj lighter than usual, owing probably to the late spring and then to the protracted dry weather. The last few days of damp weather has given the farmers a short spell after all the strenuous days in the ensilage pits and on the haystacks. Miss Kennedy is starting her annual leave with a trip to Wellington. Miss Eileen Wells is spending her Christmas holidays in North Taranaki. Miss A. E. Death, who is teaching at Auroa, is going to attend the summer school at Whangarei. Mr. Bernie Eustace, who recently had his hand badly crushed in a pump, is now home from hospital. Mrs. Mills, who has been staying with her daughter, Mrs. Lionel Hicks, and visiting other relatives and friends in Taranaki, has gone north en route for Tauranga. ALTON ANNUAL PICNIC. The Alton school's annual picnic and presentation of prizes took place on Friday. The weather failed to damp the children’s ardour and all repaired to the hall, where games and lunch kept everyone occupied till 12.30 p.m., after which voluntary items, school songs and Christmas carols were rendered by the children until it was time for the presentation of prizes. Mr. A. J. Gibbs, chairman, commended the pupils and teachers upon the successful school year and presented every school child with a prize. The headmaster, Mr. A. Sadler, addressed the assembled children and parents upon the past year and expressed hope for the next. Afterwards all adjourned to Mr. A. J. Gibbs’ paddock, where some of the postponed sports of the morning programme were conducted. The sports, however, were suddenly deserted when the approaching bugle of Santa Claus was heard. From his heavily-laden Christmas tree he gave presents to all children on the grounds. Races, a lollie scramble and afternoon tea concluded, the day. HAWERA ENTERTAINMENTS “CHANCE OF A NIGHT TIME” “Chance of a Night Time,” the farce specially written for the screen by Ben Travers, is to be shown at the Hawera Opera House, commencing to-night and showing for three nights and a matinee on Thursday. In this film Ralph Lynn is in a new light, part producer as well as leading player. He has the role of a very harmless solicitor who, mistaken for a famous dancer, is taken to a country house where he is to give an exhibition. The charming lady partner, played by Winifred Shotter, persuades him to carry on with the deception, as the dancer has not turned up and trouble will ensue for her. He does, and the house party are given entertainment as unexpected as it is funny. East of •Borneo” commences on Christmas night. Reserves at Miss Blake’s.
