Rec. 8.30 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 21. Australia defeated South ' Africa in the second cricket test by an innings and 155 runs. The South Africans made 153 and 161 and Australia in a single innings compiled 469. Sultry weather with a slight drizzle prevailed when the match was resumed. Th# Australian tail failed to wag, Bell capturing three wickets for 14 runs.
The Australians’ innings having yielded 469 the Springboks commenced a long chase after runs. Christy started well, hitting McCabe for four boundaries in th# second over. Grimmett was brought oq and Christy banged him to the fence thre# times in one over. Fifty appeared in 27 minutes. Ironmonger was also clouted ttf the fence, but he had Christy caught nex| balk Christy’s knock was the best far In the match.
After lunch Wall dismissed Mitchell and Cameron with successive balls. MorkeS and Taylor followed in quick order, with five wickets for 100 South position was hopeless.
Viljoen was next to fail, the last three wickets having fallen without altering th« f total. Nine of the next ten overs were maidens. The end was then in sight, and despite a determined stand by Vincent, who had the best average of his aide, Australia inflicted defeat by an innings and 155 runs.
